Use these practical guides to compare a plan by suitability, not just its headline price.
01 / DATA ALLOWANCE
How much mobile data do you need?
Light browsing and messaging generally use less mobile data than streaming or frequent hotspot use. Look at your phone's data-usage settings or a past bill to estimate your actual consumption. Choose an allowance with a sensible margin rather than paying for an unlimited plan automatically.
Tip: Check whether an allowance is measured per month or 30-day period and whether unused data can roll over.
02 / CONTRACT LENGTH
Rolling or longer contract?
A 30-day arrangement can offer flexibility, while a 12- or 24-month plan may advertise a lower initial rate. Review future price rises, notice periods and early exit costs. The lowest displayed monthly price is not always the lowest total cost.
03 / CHANGING NETWORK
Switching and keeping your number
Before you move, check your current contract end date and any outstanding device payments. UK providers can explain number-porting options and required switching codes. Request switching instructions from your current or new network using their official channels.
04 / SIGNAL & ROAMING
Coverage and travel conditions
Test coverage for your postcode and usual travel routes. If you travel, check country coverage, fair use and additional roaming charges carefully. 'Unlimited' plans may still apply fair-use or network-management policies.
05 / TOTAL COST
Compare the whole amount payable
Account for upfront charges, recurring fees, scheduled mid-contract rises, promotional discounts, handset repayments, extras and any potential exit charges. Ofcom publishes guidance to help UK consumers evaluate mobile packages.
